This is so funny. I spent the month of July in Australia, because my aunt was dying. But it was also great visiting cousins. The world is getting smaller.

So while researching current acronyms used in social media, I came across this Australian article, Social media speak: The 60 new abbreviations that are dominating the way young people communicate with one another.

This list summarizes the article in case you don’t have time to read it in its entirety. It’s very interesting. Teenagers are the same around the world. But then again, so is social media.

  • LOL, OMG and ILY top the list, with more than 2 million uses by Australians
  • monitored Twitter for three months to gather data
  • Despite growing list of acronyms, people are also returning to full words
  • The use of these words is usually accompanied by a form of visual media
